The Oosterdam in this day and age is a ‘mid sized’ ship and carried 2111 guests and 809 crew and at no time did the ship appear crowded even on ‘sea days’ when there where still plenty of sun chairs available. It also offered an “As you wish” dining option which meant that we could choose to have dinner at the time that suited us best and get a table for two every night rather than having fixed times and having to share a table with strangers. Generally the food was very good, although we did feel that the lunchtime buffet was rather limited.

The itinerary was Barcelona (Spain), Monte Carlo (Monaco), Livorno (Italy), Civitavecchia (Italy), Messina (Italy), Navplion (Greece), Katakolon (Greece), Corfu, Dubrovnik (Croatia) and Venice (Italy) all in 12 days, so it was a bit of a case of if its Wednesday it must be Monaco, but it was an excellent combination of destinations. Cruising past the Island of Stromboli (an active Volcano) and the approaches into Venice overlooking St Mark’s Square are certainly worth a mention.

A couple of things to consider, HAL offer airport transfers on arrival and departure which are at a horrendous price – so much cheaper to take a taxi even for just two people and this way you can travel when you want to and not wait to be herded on to a coach. The ship gave no information for ‘independent’ travellers disembarking at Venice which was disappointing and caused unnecessary stress for those on early flights; however on the day it in fact could not have been easier to make your own way. The cost of the ship transfers in Corfu where also expensive and we found it a relatively easy walk into town (approx 20 minute stroll)

Overall, despite a few niggles the HAL experience was good, although we felt that Celebrity are slightly better as far as overall service is concerned but we would cruise with HAL again providing both the itinerary and the price where right.

My city break to Rome was truly wonderful. I confidently recommend this stunning city to all, and it is one city that I know that I will definitely be re-visiting again in the future.

We flew from Gatwick Airport direct into Rome Ciampino Airport. The flight arrived earlier than expected, the staff are very friendly and our luggage was prompt. A local bus company operates an airport service, leaving every 30 minutes from outside the main terminal building. The journey takes about 40 minutes and drops everyone outside the main train station in Rome. From here you can take a taxi to your hotel; however we decided to enjoy the glorious sunshine, get our bearings and walk to our hotel. I do have to stress to ladies, take flat or wedge shoes due to the cobbled streets – otherwise you may struggle like me!

We booked our two night stay at the Regno Hotel. This sweet hotel is superbly located in the heart of the old town in a prime location on the Via del Corso, which is one of the main shopping streets in Rome. The hotel is a 16th century building and is traditionally and tastefully furnished inside to a modern and classic style. The rooms are of a good size and equipped with telephone, satellite TV, air conditioning, mini bar and hair dryer.

The Regno Hotel is set in a fantastic location just 20 minutes walk from the Trevi Fountain – throw a penny and make a wish, Spanish Steps – take a seat on the steps and watch the world go by whilst people watching, Piazza Navona, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink in one of the many cafes admiring the three fountains, Piazza Venezia – just down the road from the hotel and why not take to the roof for stunning views, Pantheon – view the breathtaking dome, and the entire old town with it’s shopping to be enjoyed. I found it wonderful being able to visit so much and also know that our hotel was not far to nip back to when needed.

The Colosseum is spectacular - I would definitely recommend paying for one of the official tours. Our English speaking tour guide was knowledgeable and passionate. I feel that you would miss out on so much without their assistance.

My top tips for any holiday in Rome would be to perhaps go for longer than two nights, take comfy shoes for walking round the city and above all, take a reliable camera with plenty of film or memory as it is very picturesque and you will no doubt get snap-happy like I did.

Rome is a stunningly beautiful city bursting with history and culture. A real gem and perfect for any special occasion trip.
